It always takes me a bit after these award shows to post. I like to provide a little something extra, rather than just the usual lineup of photos, and that can take a bit of time.  I’ve compiled the usual sets of photos, but decided to add, wherever possible, a link to where you can buy the actual piece of vintage jewelry that a particular star wore. I thought that might be tons of fun!

In doing my search, I noticed that vintage dresses were not really ‘in’ this year, so I’m going to give some major ‘props’ to Selena Gomez for wearing this really cool ’70s era red jumpsuit to an Emmy pre-party. The color is wonderful on her and it makes her legs look sky high.

Katherine Heigl also wore vintage, and this pale beige-gold Parisian silk John Hayles dress was panned on some sites. Me? I like it on her, even though the collar is a bit matronly:

To make up for the lack of vintage fashion, vintage jewelry seemed to be all the rage, especially yellow gold, which seems to be quite in-vogue for fall.  One of my favorite Fred Leighton pieces, a circa 1940s 18K yellow gold bracelet in a honeycomb pattern, accented with diamonds, was worn by actress Uzo Aduba, of Orange is the New Black fame. The Leighton ring is spectacular as well: it’s a 1940s 18K yellow gold bombe diamond cocktail confection.  View the gallery below and click for larger views of each image:

Also rocking the yellow gold trend was Christina Hendricks, that bombshell redhead with attitude!  She made a bold choice of dress, in a red one-shouldered number with gold lace accents.  She wore a bucketload of bracelets, including a fantastic Victorian yellow gold bangle set with pearls and garnets. I’ve created a little gallery of photos so you can not only see this bracelet, but can see close-ups of others she wore. Click to enlarge a photo:

Natalie Dormer, the British actress who starred as Anne Boleyn in the Showtime Series The Tudors,  chose some stunning yellow gold vintage pieces to wear with her bold orange and black gown. On display were Victorian-era  gold and onyx earrings, Victorian black enamel gold bracelets, and a Victorian onyx/gold bangle, a Victorian gold carved onyx Pharaoh ring, and a Victorian diamond ring, Love the black nail polish! Click to enlarge a photo:

Platinum also made quite a showing on the red carpet this year.  Christine Baranski chose some classic Art Deco pieces to accent her navy blue gown. She layered circa 1930s platinum, diamond and sapphire Fred Leighton line bracelets and accented them with a beautiful 1930s platinum, diamond and sapphire ring.

Always classy and beautiful, Minnie Driver also rocked platinum and diamonds. She wore circa 1950s platinum and diamond spray earrings,  circa 1920s diamond and onyx platinum bracelets together with an Art Deco platinum and diamond bracelet, and capped it all with a lovely art deco platinum and diamond ring. Love the neckline of her dress! Click to enlarge a photo:

Jessica Pare, best-known as her role as Don Draper’s wife on Mad Men, wore a stunning circa 1950s diamond and platinum necklace, which looked gorgeous with her black dress:

I can’t say enough good things about Laverne Cox’s look! From the dress to the jewelry to the shoes to the purse – wow is she put-together! The use of the vintage pins, which she had sewn into the dress, is a touch of genius! She is wearing Fred Leighton pieces: platinum and diamond circa 1940s swirl earrings, those gorgeous Art Deco platinum and diamond fan pins, and two bracelets – an Art Deco platinum bracelet with diamonds and sapphires and an Art Deco platinum and diamond bracelet. Click to enlarge a photo to see these beauties close-up!

Hayden Panettiere is one of my favorite actresses and her show, Nashville, is a must-watch in my book. Hayden steals the red carpet in a silvery beaded dress that perfectly enhances her pregnant frame.  Proving less is more, she adds a simple pair of platinum drop old mine-cut diamond earrings, a Victorian-era 18K yellow gold ring with pearls and diamonds as well as a 19th century diamond cluster ring.

I‘d be remiss if I didn’t mention a man, especially a man who has the class to wear vintage Cartier. Here is Bryan Cranston, in a vintage Cartier tank watch. Good choice Mr. Cranston, good choice. Click to enlarge a photo:

Now for the fun part – Beladora Jewelry shared their beautiful vintage jewelry with (at least) three actresses for this year’s Emmy awards. Below I’ll share the photos and give you the links so you can purchase any of these pieces yourself! Who wouldn’t want to own jewelry with such provenance?!

Let’s start with Natasha Lyonne, of Orange is the New Black. This fiery redhead went with some circa 1980s yellow gold coral and onyx bangles and  yellow gold onyx ring:

Carrie Brownstein of Portlandia wore a 1965 era mid-century 18K yellow gold bracelet and an 18K Cartier Diamond ring. Both are simple and pretty. Click to enlarge a photo:

I saved Kelly Osbourne for last, because she’s the only one I know who can be so funky, yet have such wonderful style! From the purple hair to her black and white lacy dress to her wonderful choices of retro and mid-century jewelry, this girl has limitless appeal.  She mixed it up on the red carpet, wearing both multi-gemstone 18K yellow gold earrings and 18K retro earrings, a circa 1940s 14K gold bracelet, a lovely 18K diamond and platinum diamond ring,  a 14K retro citrine and spinel ring, a Edwardian 18K spinel and diamond ring, a retro rose and yellow gold bracelet, a retro ruby and diamond bracelet, a retro citrine and topaz ring, and a gorgeous 14K moonstone bracelet I just might snap up myself.  Here are Kelly’s photos in gallery form:

Fashion and country music has a long, divisive history. Minnie Pearl and her tag hats? Iconic, gimmicky, but completely identifiable – that was her signature, her mark which identified her as ‘pure Minnie’, as you can see:

Me, I prefer the down-home country look. Give me a pair of great boots, some well-fitting jeans, a white t-shirt and I’m about as comfortable as I can get. A cute dress with a pair of boots? That’s do-able as well, but hard to pull off without looking like I’m going to a Halloween party.  This style has been around for decades – Loretta Lynn, pulled it off beautifully in her heyday:

Jewel Kilcher (known in the music industry as simply Jewel) modernizes the style, by adding lace and leggings, in this beautiful promo photo for one of her CDs:

And I must include a photo of the handmade guitar strap her husband Ty made for her, complete with bullet shells,  which could not scream country any louder. Doesn’t every chick guitar-player need one of these? I know I do!

Still, the girl can get glammed up in a vintage dress, as proven by this ‘selfie’ Jewel took for her Twitter fans before a show in 2009:

When you want to talk classic country with an elegant flair, no one, in my opinion,  does it better than Holly Williams! She may have a famous name (she’s the grand-daughter of Hank Williams, daughter of Hank Williams Jr.) but ,musically, she is in a class all her own, combining poignant lyrics with down-home country picking and playing. And just when you think you know her, she throws in some gorgeous piano ballads to reel you in even further.

Holly gigged at The Hamilton recently in DC supported by her husband, Chris Coleman on guitar along with Sugarland’s Annie Clements on bass, The evening was pure magic!. It’s been a long time since anyone has blown my doors off , but – wow – she has stopped me in my tracks! Holly’s music is a constant on my playlist and will be for a long time. And fashion? Look at these killer boots:

And Miss Holly doesn’t stop there – she’s got a shop chock-full of great items in Nashville called H. Audrey, which was featured as an Elle Magazine Top Shop! And be sure to peruse her  blog,  The Afternoon Off , which is full of delightful anecdotes, recipes and lots of great music!

Oh, and as for Ms. William’s music? Give a listen – you’ll be hooked:

A bit late folks and I apologize for that. Three kids, three different schools, three different back-to-school nights and a whole bunch of changes, and here I am!  So on to the Emmy Awards, held this past September!

Who else to start with but the irrepressible Zooey Deschanel, who showed up on the red carpet wearing Reem Acra’s beautiful robin’s egg blue confection. While not truly vintage, the dress is a frothy reproduction of classic 1950s style, with its full tulle skirt and closely fitted sweetheart bodice. The only accents worn were a simple marquise-shaped diamond ring on one middle finger and a classic pair of diamond studs. Well done, Ms. Deschanel, well done:

Lest Zooey steal the show, enter Joanne Froggatt from Downtown Abbey in a vintage Vivienne Westwood Taupe number. The gorgeous color sets Ms. Frogatt’s skin aglow, and oh, that neckline!  The drape is just divine, as is the sweet tie at the waist. Glittery Jimmy Choo peeptoe pumps and a sparkly classic clutch add some elegance without having to resort to overdone jewels. Loose wavy hair and simple make-up and Ms. Froggatt sets the standard on the red carpet for doing it right!

The bright spot of the evening was, without doubt, Gretchen Mol in a vintage Valentino orangey-red simple slit sheath. Funky Christian Louboutin shoes (buy them here) feature clear plastic straps and little bows all in a row. A shirred clutch in a matching color is tucked discreetly by her side. And OH, THOSE EARRINGS! Fred Leighton 19th century diamond drops sparkle and shine, but refuse to be outdone by the lovely circa 1960s platinum, rock crystal and diamond cocktail ring worn on her right hand.

Makes me want to step up my game – these sweats I’m wearing are just NOT going to cut it!

Till next time,

Lots to do today, including a talk to a Girl Scout Troop about running an  internet business and a little vintage jewelry show-and-tell. I just had to take the time though to link you to one of my favorite all-time blogs called Suri’s Burn Book.

Absolutely Hilarious!

Suri’s Burn BookMarch 9, 2012 “I used to be the tougher parent, but since the birth of the twins, Brad’s had to play bad cop more often,” she said. Please. Everyone knows who the mean one is. If Angelina Jolie was around, Pol Pot would be the good cop.

Today’s entry is about how to wear vintage without looking like you’ve just emerged from a clown car. Remember, you want to look fashionable, not like a snapshot in time gone wrong. The KISS rule applies to so many aspects of our lives, how we dress included.

The iconic Coco Chanel’s main fashion rule was “Look in the mirror before you leave the house – and take one thing off!”  Her point? Less is more.  It is always better to wear one great vintage piece than drape yourself head-to-toe. Have a spectacular but detailed dress? Keep your accessories classic and simple. An elegant dress with clean lines? Feel free to bring in something with a bit more punch.

Take a look at these photos of one woman who does vintage right, designer and model Dita Von Teese. She wore this gorgeous vintage Vivienne Westwood blue floral dress to the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend Festival. Notice her neck is unadorned – why would anyone want to detract from that pretty little accent on the strap? The almost frameless sunglasses are a perfect touch as well as the classic red lips.  A watch and one ring is all the jewelry needed. Notice as well how she keeps the shoes neutral so even the ankle bow doesn’t detract from the busy pattern on the dress.

Jessica Alba is another gorgeous woman who rocks vintage. Her Ceil Chapman little black dress is an example of simple and elegant and she accents it with a classic pair of earrings, one ring, and cute two-tone pumps. By the way? If you haven’t heard of Ceil Chapman, give her a google – you won’t regret it! Marilyn Monroe just loved her designs, as did a lot of movie stars in the day. The woman knew how to place a pleat!

Nicole Richie has come a long way from her “The Simple Life” days. I’m used to seeing her in bohemian garb so it’s no surprise that the circa 1940s gown she chose for the “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art has an edge. The cut-out sleeves and studs really give this white dress eye-appeal and its simple lines doesn’t overwhelm Ms. Richie’s tiny frame. She keeps the accessories to a minimum, adding a bit more bling with the silver accents in her clutch and the silver peep-toes. Elegant soft waves in her hair and pretty dark pink lips complete her look. In a word? Gorgeous.

So remember the rules folks! Don’t over-accessorize, don’t pile on the vintage, and for gosh sakes, if you decide to indulge in vintage undergarments, please buy new-old stock in the original package. Otherwise, it’s simply someone else’s used underwear!!  Just. Ick.

I’ll even help in that endeavor – please peruse Dita Von Teese’s line of retro lingerie for ideas.

Many people immediately think “thrift store”. This in turn makes them think of old clothing from Goodwill, clothing that they wouldn’t really want to wear too often although they might consider buying it in this recession in order to save some cash.
